Transitioning from developer to tech lead is exciting but isn’t a piece of cake.

I wish I had known better 12 years ago when I decided to take the leap into leadership by myself — and when I did it by trial and error! 🤷‍♂️

If you are thinking to jump into leadership roles, here are my three key recommendations to do a faster and more effective transition:

1️⃣ Understand what awaits you

Search for information on the internet, read books, ask people around you who have experienced it before, or attend our free webinar: from Dev to Tech Lead ^^.

Having a clear understanding of what is expected from you, the key skills required, and the most significant differences you will find concerning your current role will allow you to decide if being a Tech Lead is for you.

2️⃣ Seek support and advice

Having a mentor and a support network to guide you through the process will make things easier and prevent you from making the most common mistakes — as well as offer companionship and emotional support.

It can be your current manager, a Tech Lead from within your company or externally, a member of an online community, or a professional mentor. You can have more than one to get different perspectives.

3️⃣ Get prepared in advance

That’s what I call informal leadership. If you are clear about the progression, start practicing NOW some of the key skills you will need!

We will see in the webinar what they are and how to train them, but I can give you a preview of some of them:

Broadening your technical vision, communicating technical concepts in a way that non-technical people can understand, mentoring your team, delegating, or resolving conflicts.

If you are transitioning from developer to tech lead or are new in the role, don’t forget to register for my webinar taking place on February 23!

I will share all the keys to making this transition effectively, the skills needed, some of the most common mistakes (so you don’t fall into them), and the best practices to stand out as a great tech lead!

…Or, if you know someone on your team that you see this webinar could impact their professional career, share this newsletter :)
